This view of earthquake information shows where (on the map of the world) earthquakes have ocurred (historically). Yearly Maps The yearly maps display where earthquakes ocurred for each year. Darker red areas indicate areas with a higher density of earthquakes -- these will generally center around the earth's tectonic plates. The 'All Years' option will show an aggregate map of all the data in the earthquake database. Specialty Maps The 'Newly Active' map shows areas that have recently been active, but have never been active before. We accomplish this by plotting all earthquakes in reverse order, using older earthquakes to 'erase' the locations where they ocurred. This gives us a picture of areas that are now becoming active. The 'Blank Map' shows the world map we've used to generate all of the other maps. If the map you are looking at is too obscured by red to distinguish features, click on the 'Blank Map'. |
